Editorial Review for Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park – by Steve Merrill
Overview
The 2,884 acres of protected land contain several small peaks, hiking trails, historic markers, a small Civil War museum and an observation deck. From the observation deck, look southeast to Atlanta's sundry skylines and east to Stone Mountain. The crowded one-mile trail to the summit offers a good workout, but a disappointing finish at a parking lot. Serious hikers tackle a series of loops ranging from two to 16 miles in length. All are great jogs, too.
Facts
The park is the site of the Atlanta Campaign, the June 18 to July 2, 1864, Civil War battle. It was here that Gen. William T. Sherman's Union forces encountered a Confederate entrenchment. Sherman tried to conquer the undermanned troops, but eventually had to concede the battle and march on to Atlanta. The three battlefield areas are in front of the visitor center, off Burnt Hickory Road and at Cheatham Hill.

I love going to Kennesaw Mountain for exercise! There are several trails so you can explore a different path each time you go! For a long walk, you can take the trail to the Marietta Museum of history (about 3 miles). There are always people around so I feel safe and it's great to be in the fresh air! Best times to go: Weekend mornings, after work during the week-- fall and spring are perfect weather. If you take the mountain road, it's a great uphill walk (about 1 mile) but watch out for the shuttle bus -- it runs every 30 min and the driver drives WAY TOO FAST!!
Pros: Great exercise, bathrooms
Cons: bus driver-too fast, parking

Nice hike, free, and close to shopping. Don't expect to much - it is Kennesaw after all. But the "mountain" is alright. I live in the area and visit there every few months. The view is ok and the attractions are alright. My only problem with the historic part is the same thing that I have a problem with at most of the Georgia historic places. They all need to start out with a "ok, there use to be a bunch of cool stuff here and then it got burned down. Please see inside for a scale model of how cool it use to look".
